The People’s Democratic Party, PDP has announced the confirmation of a former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, as the permanent chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees. Also, a former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, was named as the BoT Secretary, taking over from former Minister of Special Duties Kabir Turaki.
These appointments were made public after the 76th BoT meeting held at Wadata Plaza in Abuja on Tuesday. Wabara became the interim chairman of the PDP BoT in 2022, after the resignation of the former BoT chairman, Walid Jibrin, from his role.
PDP BoT also called on President Bola Tinubu to tackle the deteriorating insecurity in the country and the persistent decline in the value of the naira.
Former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, was also named as the BoT Secretary, taking over from former Minister of Special Duties, Kabir Turaki. Wabara, said the BoT expressed grave concerns over the severe economic hardship, high price of essential life-improving commodities, and frightening food shortage in the country. He said, “The BoT is shocked by the worsening insecurity in the country as shown by the increasing cases of mass killings, banditry, kidnap for ransom, and acts of terrorism by attackers who are encouraged by the obvious lack of concern of the APC administration to issues of security, especially in the last nine months.
“The BoT is disgusted by the massive corruption and unrestrained looting of the treasury in the APC administration especially the looting of billions of Naira meant for relief for poor and vulnerable Nigerians. “The BoT is very worried over the fall of the Naira to a dismal N1,500 to the Dollar, constant increase in the pump price of fuel which now sells for over N700 per liter with long queues in different parts of the country. “These have negative impacts as shown by the nearly 30% inflation rate, 41% unemployment rate, and alarming 46% poverty rate where up to 130 million citizens have plunged deeper into multi-dimensional poverty in the last nine months.
“The BoT is troubled that the disastrous economic and security situation in the country has made Nigerians hopeless, depressed, angry and poses a present and immediate danger to the survival of the country as hardworking young Nigerians, professionals in vital fields as well as major multinational companies are now exiting our nation in large numbers.
“The BoT is saddened that there are no clear and consistent policies, measures, and steps by the APC administration to address these existential threats which have put the country in a dangerous situation. “The BoT urges President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to realize that the situation in the country has become intolerable. Mr. President should urgently address the issues of corruption in his administration, worsening insecurity in the country, continuous fall in the value of the Naira, high fuel price, unbearable food shortage, and unemployment in the country.”
He assured the Nigerian public that despite the challenges, the PDP remains united, stronger, and more committed in its dedication to working for the welfare of Nigerians and protecting their interest at all times. Wabara also said, “In this regard, the BoT as the Conscience of the Party urges all Organs, leaders, critical stakeholders, and members of the PDP across the country to remain united and focused as the Party further reorganizes for the task ahead.
“In the effort to further fortify itself, the BoT has confirmed His Excellency, Senator Adolphus Wabara as its Chairman and His Excellency, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi as Secretary by the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).”
