No! The Obedient is not a political party. It is a movement inspired by youths to compel the government to stop the impunity of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit that culminated in the #EndSARS protest.
I suggest obedience should be a force to correct and criticize any action or inaction of our government. It should be a group of people (not just youth) whose positive action is taken upon themselves individually and collectively towards bringing patriotic people into government.
No doubt, issues might have inspired many to join the movement. The fundamental aim of the obedient is to influence Nigerians into holding their people at the helm of power accountable.
Call it a politically motivated movement but a pressure group whose responsibility is to influence good people into government, irrespective of political party, ethnicity, or religion.
If these are the objectives of the Obedient, the lifecycle of the movement is unfurling. These should be an awakening for a better Nigeria, not for individual’s parochial sentiment, ethnic or religious prejudice.
It is a movement to challenge those in government for transparency. It should be a movement that inclusively sensitizes the youth, literate and non-literate alike, the need for them to know their rights and liberty by holding their leaders accountable in their various constituencies. Youths always stamp their foot whenever they express their grievance against the maladministration of people in government, they become victims of reckless uniformed government officials who don’t know the function of their uniform.
My advice to the Obedient is, to be law-abiding and respectful in expressing their objectives so that the government will not use their action against the movement.
As Noam Chomsky, an American linguist, philosopher, historian, and social critic, said in one of his quotes, said the way to keep people passive and obedient strictly limits the spectrum of acceptable but allows very lively debate within that spectrum.
I hope the security agencies of government, the ruling APC, and the president-elect, Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will be sensitive in their duties and responsibilities to uphold the right of the people so that the actions and inaction that give rise to the #EndSARS phenomenon do not rear its head again.
The Nigerians are watching.
