Literally the terms Fatherland and Motherland have the same meaning, namely "homeland", but both have differences when examined from the point of view of culture, history and traditions.
Countries of the former Roman Empire usually use the term Fatherland to
personify their homeland in a masculine manner, for example Germany. Since the time of Nazi rule, the term Fatherland has been used as propaganda for the appeal of nationalism when making reference to Germany as a state leading to law and order.
On the other hand, we take the country that personifies their homeland in a feminine way as an example of our own country, Indonesia. Indonesia is often referred to as Mother Earth. Motherland is the embodiment of the homeland or the national personification of Indonesia. Since prehistoric times, various ethnic groups in the archipelago have respected the spirit of nature, they liken nature as the mother who gave birth to life in this country. This is in line with the concept of "Motherland" adopted by many countries, the homeland as the homeland and we were born by a mother.
In short, Fatherland refers to the government of politics, law and order. Motherland connotes birth and nurturing.
Here are 2 versions of the world map that show the use of the nicknames fatherland and motherland
