Which creatures sacrifice their own young when threatened by a predator?

But Komodo Dragon babies instinctively climb to the trees within 2–3 days of hatching.

 Adult Komodos cannot climb trees.

The reason Komodo babies flee to the trees, is because after a 2–3 day period of time and sometimes sooner, they become open season for the adults, including their mother, in the event she or others gets the post-partum munchies and is too lazy to go on a hunt.

 If we are going for “Greatest parental failure of the year” award, I don’t think it would be the parent that abandons their baby-

I think it would be the parent that literally eats their baby… Out of sheer laziness.

*The above centered Komodo is not actually getting its head eaten- just the opposite;

It is trying to steal the food out of its friends mouth, while its friend on the left, Paul, says “Whoa man… you need to calm down a bit… Boundaries.”

Update: Cheese n’ crackers people, this is by far my most popular answer ever! Its a bit surprising because I only spent a few minutes typing it out, but I’ll take it!

Here are a couple other animal related answers people seem to like as well!
